These photographs were taken in Newtown which is situated in Johannesburg’s inner city.
As the land was rich in clay, the area was used for brick making in the past but it has now evolved into a place of creativity, art and culture thanks to the implementation of urban renewal.
As a result theatres, galleries, cafes, craft markets and clubs have made Newtown their home.
“I believe that in the history of art and of thought
there has always been
at every living moment of culture
a will to renewal.”

Beautifully captured! They make me homesick:-)
Thank you. I was born in Johannesburg and, even though I haven’t lived there since I was 20, I still think of it as home.
