An interesting theme – here’s my contribution.

“… there will always be flowers”
My mother died on the 3rd June. One of the messages of sympathy I received ended with “…… there will always be flowers”. The meaning of these words became apparent during this time of grieving. The flowers in my home, the flowers in the chapel and the flowers in my office comforted me.
My mother loved church, the traditions and the hymns. In tribute to the sweetness of her unquestioning belief, we choose the children’s hymn “All Things Bright And Beautiful”, for her memorial service and we made sure that the floral arrangement in the church was an array of bright and beautiful flowers.
I asked my daughter to read out my eulogy, as I was too emotional to speak myself, which ended with this beautiful poem.
“If Roses grow in Heaven”
If Roses grow in Heaven
Lord, please pick a bunch for me.
Place them in my Mother’s arms
and tell her they’re from me.
Tell her that I love her and miss her,
and when she turns to smile,
place a kiss upon her cheek
and hold her for awhile.
Because remembering her is easy,
I do it every day,
but there’s an ache within my heart
that will never go away.

To my beautiful mother, may you rest in peace.

Daily Prompt: Say Your Name
My mother was brought up in a children’s home and never had many toys. She named the few dolls she did have “Ruth” and, finally, when I was born, she had a real live doll to call “Ruth”.
As a child, I thought that the name “Ruth” was too simple and yearned to be called “Rebecca” or “Rachael” but I’ve grown to like my name.
One incident in school made me wish I had another name. Because I was talking in class the monitor had to record my name on the blackboard – I was mortified to see my name spelt “Roof”!

Ardmore Ceramic Art
Ardmore is situated in the Caversham Valley, KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, and is the home of beautiful ceramic art. The area around Ardmore is picture book perfect and the ideal place for a studio.
I was very excited about visiting as I have been an admirer of Ardmore creations for a long time. Ardmore have exhibited their work all over the world and, I believe, both Queen Elizabeth and Nelson Mandela own Ardmore pieces.
The work has drama and tells a story, making the pieces like a ceramic book. The colours are strong and lovely. Nature dominates at Ardmore, there are monkeys and lions and butterflies and flowers ……… the list and combinations are endless.
After spending some time browsing, I couldn’t resist buying a small dish, decorated with zebra. It is safely displayed in a glass cabinet at home and gives me such pleasure.
We finished off our outing by having lunch at Caversham Mill where the food matched the fabulous setting. A great day out in the country!
Easter Cupcakes
Apart from the absolute essence of Easter which is celebrated today in churches all around the world, Easter is also synonymous with various foods.
Easter eggs, chocolates, roast lamb, are all part of our Easter celebrations.
We celebrated the new life that Easter promises with an Easter lunch and served these cupcakes for afters.
Aren’t they pretty?
Heia Safari Ranch
When my family came from England for a visit, we stayed at Heia Safari Ranch in Muldersdrift. Muldersdrift is a wonderful area for weddings and tourism and Heia Safari is the creation of a amazing space in a beautiful place.
Zebra, giraffe, peacock, buck and even a zonkey (cross between a zebra and a donkey), mingle freely with the guests which was a great introduction to Africa for our visitor from New Zealand.
My granddaughters were particularly impressed by the giraffe, who passively nibbled away at the top leaves of the trees, blissfully unperturbed by their presence.
Getting a good shot of the peacock was a real exercise in patience but eventually, he showed off his glorious colours.
The zebra like to make their way to the swimming pool for a drink. Swimmers have to vacate the pool when the zebras arrive as the safety of the animals is paramount. They cannot be disturbed as, should they be startled, they may slip and injure themselves.
Good times!
